ECONOMYNEXT – Seventeen new COVID-19 patients were identified in Sri Lanka as at 6am today (31J), the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 (NOCPOC) said.
All 17 patients were returnees from abroad: Three from the Maldives who were being quarantined at the Koggala Beach Hotel, 12 from the UAE and two from India.
With the new cases, total confirmed COVID-19 cases in the island has risen to 3,012, with 140 active cases and 52 Individuals currently under investigations in hospitals.
Eleven patients returned upon recovery as at 6am today, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,860.
NOCPOC said out of the newly recovered patients, three are detainees from the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Centre while eight were returnees from abroad.
The number of patients reported from the Kandakadu cluster has increased to 639, out of which 518 are detainees, 67 are staff, five are invited staff members, 48 are close contacts and one is a close contact of the patient found from Welikada prison.
A total of 619 have recovered from the Kandakadu cluster while 20 are still undergoing treatment.
Yesterday, 447 returnees arrived in the country, of whom 400 returned from Doha, Qatar and 47 from Chennai, India.
NOCPOC said that all returnees will be directed to military-run quarantine centres upon their arrival.
Meanwhile, the number of people in quarantine in 67 centres run by the armed forces is 6,901.
A total of 226,111 PCR tests have been carried out in the island so far with 2,129 PCR tests conducted yesterday.
As at 6am today, 73 people concluded their quarantine process at the military-run centres, NOCPOC said, bringing the total number of completed quarantines in Sri Lanka to 35,097.
