ECONOMYNEXT – China’s state-owned power plant and railway equipment manufacturer Dongfang Electric International Corporation has won a contract to supply rail containers to Sri Lanka to transport solid waste, the government information office said.
The containers are to carry solid waste by rail from Kelaniya, near the capital Colombo to a planned sanitary landfill in Aruwakkalu, in northwestern Puttalam.
The project is meant as a solution to Colombo’s mounting solid waste stocks, most of which are now dumped in landfills.
The award of the contract for rail containers was approved by Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers this week on a proposal by Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka, a statement said.
Dongfang Electric group also makes sealed garbage container trucks as well as railway engines and passenger coaches.
It had earlier won a contract to supply railway engines for the project.
