ECONOMYNEXT- A fauly power cable at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake caused a power outage for a half hour Saturday morning, the state-owned Airport and Aviation Services Limited (AASL) said in a statement.
The airport operations were disrupted for a short while, but AASL workers were able to locate the fault and restore power within 28 minutes, Executive Director Sanjeewa Wijeratne said.
He said a 40 kilometre long high-tension power cable ring installed 30-years ago, which is central to the BIA’s electrical system, malfunctioned.
BIA, which is Sri Lanka’s main airport, has returned to normalcy, Wijeratne said.
He has offered an apology to all airport users for the inconventience on behalf of AASL.

The three decade old power system is scheduled for upgrade in 2020 under the airport development project funded by Japan International Coopration Agency to help expand passenger capacity, Wijeratne said. (Colombo/Nov09/2019)
