COLOMBO (News 1st): The National Movement to Protect the Colombo Port East Terminal has requested the Prime Minister to withdraw from the agreement signed to privatize the Eastern Terminal at the Colombo Port. In a letter forwarded by the movement to the Prime Minister, they request for the Eastern Terminal to be operated by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
The letter cites the agreement entered into between the Sri Lankan Government, Japan and India on May 28th, and highlights eight points regarding the agreement. The movement points out that the handing over of this terminal which is the only terminal where large ships can dock is a threat to national security.
The letter also highlights the fact that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, which has the required skilled labour and management personnel, is capable of operating the terminal. The National Movement to Protect the Colombo Port Eastern Terminal requests the Prime Minister to terminate this agreement that has dealt a massive blow to the economy as well as the job security of the employees at the port.
