ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena said he will was not ready to retire and a new step will be taken after December, as talks continued on possible support of his party at upcoming presidential polls.
President Sirisena had said that he had no need to retire and he was in good health and able to take forward a program for the country.
“Some people may be thinking that I will disappear since I haven’t said that I will contest for the Presidential elections,” he said speaking in Polonnaruwa, his home electorate.
“But I will take another step for the development of the country and Polonnaruwa, after December.
“I have no need to retire. My health is good and I can do more work for the country.:
Sajith Premadasa who had been nominated by the United National Party to be the presidential candidate, has sought talks with President Sirisena, reports said.
Premadasa has sought to have talks with SLFP general secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera on gaining support for his candidacy, Sri Lanka’s The Sunday Times newspaper said.
Separately, Sri Lanka Freedom Party was also in talks with Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna to support Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Talks were held on several agreements with SLPP, after a meeting with Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gothabaya Rajapaksa.
The matter is to be placed before central committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. (Colombo/Sep28/2019)
