ECONOMYNEXT – Starting today, Sri Lanka’s police will send individuals attempting to travel across districts violating the ongoing COVID-19 curfew to quarantine centres for a period of 14 days, DIG Ajith Rohana said.
Once quarantined, those arrested will be produced in court, Rohana told reporters yesterday.
State intelligence had received information that people working in essential services and other individuals were attempting to use their curfew pass to visit their hometowns with their families for the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil new year.
Rohana said the decision to quarantine curfew violators was taken in response to this development.
He urged all Sri Lankans to celebrate the country’s traditional new year at home with their families for the time being and to avoid visiting relatives, violating curfew and quarantine regulations.
